Issue 3, Vol XVII
April 2007

Now that all the dust has settled...
and ties are accounted for, a total of fifty individuals and ten teams have been declared Mandelbrot winners. They are listed below, following this memo. As advertised in the welcome letter, we will be mailing snazzy decks of Mandelbrot playing cards (not available in stores!) for all of the individual winners; these should arrive during the final week of April. We are also preparing plaques for the top teams, we anticipate that these will arrive by the second week of May. Congratulations to everyone appearing in the final standings. And we are enormously grateful to all of the coaches who took the time to involve students in the Mandelbrot Competition. Thanks for a great year!

There are a few small items to mention...
that will probably only apply to a couple of coaches. First, we encountered two papers without codes this past weekend: a regional part one and a regional part three. If you believe that one of these papers was written by your students, please contact us so that we can enter scores for them. We also allowed an answer of 61/421 to the probability question on the round four individual test. (A student kept track of time in minutes and included both the 10:00 and 11:00 minute in their tally.) Please check with us if you believe that any of your students deserve credit for this question.

Mandelbrot is moving!
And hopefully for the last time. Beginning this fall, Mandelbrot will be based out of St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY since I recently joined their faculty as a member of the math department. Other than resulting in a new address for mailing team test papers I trust that the relocation will have very little impact on the day to day operations of Mandelbrot.

Best wishes for the remainder of the school year, and have a relaxing and rewarding summer vacation.

Sincerely,

Sam Vandervelde
Competition Coordinator
